Gmail Tips and Tricks – Using Boolean Operators in Gmail Filters

Gmail offers Filter options which is a great and very useful feature, in addition to that you can use Boolean operators to narrow your Filters or tighten your Gmail filters.

As you do search in Google you can use the operators in Gmail filters.

Boolean Operators

AND, OR

When you create a filter you can add this in any field of Gmail Filter options
You can add this in From filed with 2 different email addresses (you cannot use AND which is not possible)
You can use OR or AND in Has the word field
This will narrow down your filter

You can also use advanced operators like quotation marks around your filter terms

Eg., �Meeting reminder�

Use it inside quote and you will not get the alert for Meeting or for reminder but for Meeting Reminder

You can also use hyphen to neglect a word (-)

Eg., �Meeting

When you enter this term, you will not filter emails with the word meeting

You can use all these with the combination of all fields and terms in it.

Gmail�s greatest strength is its filter options. This is far more better than any other email service providers like Yahoo and MSN.

You can create UNLIMITED number of Gmail filters
But when you create a forward filter you cannot create more than 20 forward filters

What is forward filter?

When you create a filter that sets few emails to be forwarded to a specific ID, these filters are called forward filters and Gmail only allows 20 forward filters

What if you want to add more forward filters?

You can use the combining forward filter options

If you want to forward 2 different senders to a same email ID, you can combine them, the steps are given below

Login to Gmail
Click create new filter menu which appears next to search button on top

You will get the filter options as seen below
In the From field of the options, enter the sender�s email addresses that you want to forward to any address
For example, If you want blogpostdemo@gmail.com and blogpostdemo+test@gmail.com to be forwarded to another ID, enter� blogpostdemo@gmail.com and blogpostdemo+test@gmail.com in the from filed as shown below
You should enter the email addresses in a bracket or parenthesis () and you should mention OR between both the email addresses
(blogpostdemo@gmail.com OR blogpostdemo+test@gmail.com)

You can enter more than 2 email addresses in the From field
Click Next step
Choose the Forward button

Enter the email ID that you want to forward emails to
And Click Create Filter to create a new filter
So this way you can combine 2 or more filters into 1
This is applicable to all the fields, you can mention OR and create filters to combine two filters

Gmail offers this fantastic feature of creating filters. And I have not seen any limitation for the number of filters one can create.

If you want to edit any filter follow the steps below

Login to Gmail
On top right corner of the page you will see the Settings options as seen below

Click the Settings link
The settings page opens with the default General option
Click the Filter tab as seen below

This page will show you all the available filter
On right side of every filter you will see a Edit and Delete link

If you click Edit, Gmail opens the filter options where you can make changes
If you click Delete, Gmail deletes the filter and Gmail will not ask for a confirmation
Once the filter is deleted Gmail shows the deleted confirmation as seen below

In the same page you have the option for creating new filters.
Remember, when you delete any filters, Gmail will not ask for the confirmation

Gmail does not offer a feature to completely block the senders. You can only spam the message or you can only delete the messages.

You can set filters to do this action.

If you want any emails to be deleted in feature, create a filter to delete the messages automatically

To create a delete filter,

Copy the senders address that you want to automatically delete

Select �Create Filter� appearing next to the Search button

Enter the senders email address

Click Next Step

Choose Delete

Then click Create filter

So messages coming from now from the address what you specified will automatically be sent to Trash

You can also choose from the Inbox view and set the filter

Open your Inbox

Choose the message that you want to delete automatically

Then click more action

You will see a drop down menu with many options

Click Filter Messages like this

Gmail automatically opens the filter option with the email address, so you do not need to copy and paste

You need to follow the other steps of setting the filters like choose delete and create filter
